WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE ENGLISH AND THAI LANGUAGE COLLIDE

Sos = surviving on samui

Just like to give everybody  a little insight into what happens when thai and english language come together ,

learn a little Thai culture and have a laugh as well

Now many know that Samui has a huge amount of pharmacies ,but a new one opened recently that gave me a little laugh ,

the name of the place is  called DRUG DEE PHARMACY, dee means good ,so Translated this means  good drug pharmacy,

Another one is  ENJOY PHARMACY probably true if you are buying condoms ,but not if you have fallen off your scooter and need some bandages

There’s one called BANJO PHARMACY that’s got nothing to do with music [maybe they sell earplugs for those staying in chaweng and another called AUSSIE  PHARMACY[maybe aussies get a discount?]

Dentist signs are funny also ,teeth/tooth is translated to FUN so that sign that says BAAN LUCK FUN  Is really a dental clinic and

 FAMILY FUN isn’t really a family day out ,no its your family dentist, then there’s ENJOY DENTAL, which for most just isn’t 

One seen recently was NIDA MASSAGE [nida pronounced needa]So for us English this would be NEED A MASSAGE [had a good laugh with that]

And many must be needed as they just opened a new branch [their third in fact],Theres a chain of massage places called MY FRIEND MASSAGE, many people ive given instructions on how to find the place actually thought they were friends of ours  ,

Restaurant menus/restaurant names  are another good laugh ,COW PAT POO translates into fried rice with crab And there used to be a restaurant with this name with a picture of a black and white cow having /making a cow pat,Always laughed when I went past this place

Also there’s a fish restaurant behind chaweng called peesoon restaurant,the guy had tee shirts and printed on the back was the slogan   IM GOING TO PEE SOON  [brilliant ]

Then there’s words like rice [khao],but pronounced COW, the number nine ,sounds like  COW, and the color white also sounds like COW so ordering 9 x white rice =COW COW COW   

The word MOO has nothing to do with cows either, its actually pig /pork

And a cat is called meow, I still laugh when you ask a thai person [pointing to a cat] what’s this and they answer [meow]

Now many Thai people have very long names ,so to help us English understanding foreigners Many Thai people shorten their names [nick names]

For instance a guy whose name is [Jackapaarn] might call himself JAC

And Porntipanaska[ my accountants name] is shortened to PORN

Which for English really becomes a dilemma, So if you see the sign saying PORN MASSAGE

this could be what you are looking for or it may be the owners name ,on samui we also have 2nd hand dealers/traders called pawn shops

so what happens if the owners name is called porn?would the sign be PORN PAWN or PORN TRADERS? 

What would be the sign of the tour company if the owners nick name was porn?????

So when I go out and say to my wife [im off to see porn ]theres no reaction at all as she knows im just off to see the accountant
