Koh Samui: SOS* Guide to breaking the law on Samui

Hi all i posted this article on tripadvisor but it was censored to the max

so heres the full uncut version

firstly im not asking anybody to actually break the law ,just giving some insight if you do,hopefully learn a little Thai culture and have a laugh as well

its actually very hard not to break the law on Samui ,especially if you want to blend in with the locals as many of them break the law every day [its true I’m not joking ]

Just arriving at the airport on Samui , collect your luggage , go to the meeting point , into your taxi /minivan and off to the hotel .pretty simple you say???,well was your driver smoking at the meeting point ?,did you light up as well? was he talking on the cell phone while driving? Announcing your arrival? Were you wearing your seat belt?[many taxis don’t have any]Was the glass in the mini van tinted? Did the driver go faster than 45 kph??? [True, yes our speed limit is 45kph]sure he did otherwise he would be blocking all the other law breakers ,was the price fixed for the fare???[Probably] does your driver have a driving license???[50/50 chance]

Did you know that it is against the law to go topless [women] in Thailand?

Yes it is and what’s even worse it that is totally disrespectful of Thai people and their culture

Yet every day along chaweng beach you see topless ladies blatantly breaking the law

Smoking in public places in Thailand is illegal

Yet the minute the smoking tourist gets off the airplane they light up and walk into the terminal and wait for their pick up service, Did they leave their manners behind ?Yes they did, this ,along with common sense is another thing that tourists lose when they come to this  island paradise

Did you know the legal age to be in a bar in samui is 20 years of age [maybe 21]half the waitresses aren’t that old ,many tourists bring their kids along to the bar as well ,All breaking the law

all of the above are breaking the law on Samui

But did you notice something?????? Every body else was doing the same thing, and no body got arrested, why you ask?

The  police here are great people and they actually need you to break the law ,yes they need you to break the law

Firstly the bib [boys in brown] does not want you to ever, ever buy a helmet for your scooter

Road blocks are set up usually around 2 week intervals to stop and fine you for not wearing a helmet

[legal fine 500 baht ,actual fine 300 baht for supplementary income fund ]

So why would they ever want everybody to abide by the law??? Its simple math’s ,and the Reason being is, they don’t  actually get paid that well ,Officers on samui get about 8000 to 10,000 Thai baht per month [some less than that],From that they have to buy their own hand gun [true, most carry guns] and some carry big guns Some ride small bikes ,some ride harleys

So with such a poor salary they need to earn extra money, some call it corruption some call it supplementary income ,Also  Samui doesn’t really have enough prison space for half of the people on the island and I could not see the local police locking themselves up because they break the law also

Really you say? Well it’s true

When you get stopped at a checkpoint for not wearing your helmet [along with many local Thai people as well] the money/fine doesn’t go back to the government, it goes into the supplementary income fund, which is illegal

So the police need you to break the law so that they can break the law as well

So it stands to reason that if they arrest you, then really they need to arrest them selves as well

So with this reasoning alone you won’t ever be arrested for these minor offences

So my challenge really to all tourists is to come to samui and not break the law

Don’t smoke in public, or at the restaurant where others are trying to enjoy their dinner [or lunch ,or breakfast for that matter]

Don’t go over 45kph, [if you try this you will cause more accidents ]

Don’t talk to underage people in the bar [which means you probably won’t be able to order a drink]

Don’t get a ride in a taxi /minivan with tinted windows,[slim to no chance]

Make the taxi turn its meter on[ its illegal not to ,but you try it ]

Don’t jay walk on the road [pretty hard not to as the footpaths have huge trees in them so you have to go on the road anyway]

to get a sense of what I mean just look at the fines involved for smoking in a restaurant [2000 Thai baht for the culprit]and 20,000 for the restaurant, fine for riding a scooter without a helmet 500 Thai baht

so it stands to reason that smoking is a worse offence than no helmet on your bike

so if you wear a helmet on your scooter you will be denying the police from buying a bigger hand gun or a bigger bike

so ive yet to understand why the police stand in the hot sun and stop scooters for an hour ,When they could be walking around air-conditioned restaurants earning a fortune?????and being environmentaly friendy as well

Maybe because the boys [and girls] in brown are just normal hardworking people trying to earn a living

In a very nice and tolerant place called Koh-Samui in the gulf of Thailand
